What's the STAAR?

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR test, is an assessment which grades students on their mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and determines if the student meets the educational standards for the grade-level (or above grade level in special circumstances). The STAAR is provided to students in grades 3-8, and End of Course exams for high school students. The subjects are as follows:

  • Reading
  • Math
  • Writing
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • End-of-course (EOC) exams for
      • English I, II, and (optional) III
      • Algebra I and (optional) II
      • Biology
      • US History

A student takes the STAAR test during the fall or spring semester and is allowed to take the STAAR more than once. However, passing the STAAR is a big deal – and there can be repercussions for failing it .

When a student fails the STAAR test, he or she is required to take accelerated instruction to increase that student’s readiness. The student is allowed to take the test 3 times. In grades 5 and 8, a student must pass the reading and math portions of the test in order to be eligible to move to the next grade level. In the case of End of Course exams that are not optional, the student must pass these tests in order to graduate from a Texas high school. To find out more, check out TEA’s website for STAAR test details.
